Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a Department of Energy national laboratory operated by UT-Battelle LLC. Approximately 6,000 federal contractor workforce. Mission spans nuclear energy, materials science, supercomputing (Frontier exascale system), and national security research.
Combined Y-12 and ORNL workforce represents one of the highest Q-clearance and L-clearance densities in the United States. Cannabis use is categorically incompatible with Q-clearance, L-clearance, and DOE security-clearance maintenance regardless of state law or federal Schedule III rescheduling. April 28, 2026 federal Schedule III rescheduling does not change DOE drug-testing rules.

From Knoxville, the EBCI Qualla Boundary and Great Smoky Cannabis Co. (91 Bingo Loop Road, Cherokee, NC) is approximately 2.5 hours via I-40 East and US-441 (the Newfound Gap Road through Great Smoky Mountains National Park). Adult-use 21+ tribal-licensed sales since September 7, 2024. Consumption must remain on tribal lands — transporting cannabis off the Qualla Boundary into Tennessee subjects to Class A misdemeanor (up to 1/2 oz) or Class E felony PWID exposure (over 1/2 oz).
